Imperfections

Skin is the biggest organ we have. If it were to be stretched, it would measure up to 2m². Its size is immense and yet, in our daily routine we forget how important it is to us. In history, skin also has played an important cultural role: it was a canvas for scarification and tattoos, but branding, self-mutilation and torture also come to mind. Only in the last 50 years have women started to wear clothes that reveal more skin. Some attributes of one’s skin are apparent – like its tone – others, like moles or scars, have to be ‘uncovered’. We often can decide who can see these specific parts of the skin, and who doesn’t.
